Heart Healthy Tips for American Heart Month

Did you know that February is National American Heart Month? Although this month is usually consumed with all things Valentine’s, it’s also important to keep track of your ticker. Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both U.S. women and men? Although the statistics are alarming, there are ways to keep heart disease at bay – starting with diet and exercise. To honor February’s American Heart Month, take a look at these heart healthy foods that you should start eating daily.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a good source of soluble fiber and contains beta-glucans, which help to lower cholesterol and stabalize blood sugar levels.

Spinach

Rich in the B vitamin, folate, which plays an important role in managing homocysteine, an amino acid which promote narrowing of the arteries.

Beets

Beetroots have protective pigment compounds called flavonoids, which deliver a wide range of bioactive properties including antioxidant and anti-cancer effects.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits have been linked to a lower risk of cancer development, and can have a significant inverse association with cardiovascular disease. This is partially due to their high levels of essential nutrients and antioxidants.

Broccoli

Broccoli is packed with antioxidant vitamins A and C. They are also loaded with phytochemicals, known to have antioxidant properties.

Nuts

Nuts are rich in heart-healthy unsaturated fat and contain protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Unsalted peanuts and walnuts are especially good for the old ticker, and have been associated with lower risk of coronary heart disease in people who eat them instead of other high-fat foods.
