Safety Tips for Hiking and Camping

Summertime is ideal for camping, whether you take the RV or pitch a tent for a couple of nights. It’s a fun way to get family and friends together to enjoy the outdoors, light nights, and warm weather. So that your family and friends stay safe during your trip, check out these camping safety tips for summer.

Be Prepared

Camping is all about preparation. Before you head off, be sure you have:

  • A full tank of fuel if you’re driving to your destination
  • A full water tank. Take every opportunity to top up your water.
  • Make sure you have plenty of food.

Be Considerate

  • Avoid touching, feeding, or getting close to wild animals. Enjoy them from a safe distance in their natural surroundings.
  • Make sure family pets are checked over for ticks and always supply them with enough food, water, and shelter.
  • Never leave trash at the campsite or in the wild. Either pick it up and take it with you or put it in a recycling or trash bin.

Be Diligent

  • Pack food in tight, waterproof bags or containers.
  • Wash your hands before preparing or eating food. If there is no running water available, take hand sanitizer.
  • Cook food to proper temperatures.
  • Pack the pet food and water bowl separately from your plates, utensils, and food.
