American Heart Month: Heart-Healthy Tips

American Heart Month

Healthy Tips for February

February is American Heart Month, which is a time where communities, businesses, and individuals resolve to live a heart-healthy lifestyle. From the food we eat to how much stress we hold can have an impact on our health. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death globally. Fortunately, these diseases are largely preventable with heart-healthy living.

Sweat it out.

It’s no secret that exercise has been linked to heart health. It’s advised that we all exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. Remember that exercise doesn’t have to be boring or expensive! Everything from walking to dancing to yoga can help to keep your heart in good shape.

Choose heart-healthy food.

High blood pressure and cholesterol are the two main culprits of causing heart diseases. What you eat has a direct link to these factors. Opt to eat a plant-based diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, oats, seeds, nuts, whole grains, and legumes. The only products that have dietary cholesterol in them are animal products (meat, dairy, and eggs), which can mean bad news for your heart and health. Work on decreasing or eliminating these products and replacing them with healthy alternatives.

Just breathe.

Adding a little Zen to your daily routine might just extend your life. Stress can increase our blood pressure, making it difficult for the heart to do its job. Work on alleviating your stress by finding time to do things you love. Whether you take a walk in nature, write out your concerns, or immerse yourself in a book, letting go of stress is important to live healthily.

Sleep well.

Poor sleep can take a toll on our heart. Lack of sleep, especially when it’s chronic, has been associated with high blood pressure and heart disease. Get a good night’s sleep by avoiding caffeine late in the day, exercising regularly, and sticking to a sleep schedule to keep your body’s clock running smoothly.
